Welcome to The Restoration Library

"Knowledge is one of the greatest gifts we can offer."

At Soma Nika, we believe restoration begins with understanding.

The Restoration Library was created to educate, encourage, and empower you to care intentionally for your skin, your crown, and your well-being.

Here you'll discover trusted information about natural skincare, healthy loc care, botanical ingredients, wellness, and the principles of stewardship that guide everything we do.

Our desire is not simply to provide products.

Our desire is to help you make informed choices that support a lifetime of intentional care.

Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been practicing natural care for years, we invite you to learn, grow, and restore with us.

Every article is written with one purpose:

"To help restore lives through knowledge, stewardship, and intentional care."

──────────────────────────────

WHAT DOES RESTORATION REALLY MEAN?

"Restoration is not merely about what is repaired. It is about what is returned to its intended purpose."

MORE THAN REPAIR

When many people hear the word restoration, they think about fixing something that has been damaged.

A piece of furniture is restored.

An old house is restored.

A classic car is restored.

But at Soma Nika, restoration carries a deeper meaning.

It is not simply the act of repairing what has been broken.

It is the intentional process of returning something to the condition, purpose, and beauty for which it was originally created.

That belief shapes everything we do.

──────────────────────────────

RESTORATION BEGINS WITH ONE CHOICE

We believe restoration rarely happens overnight.

It begins with one intentional decision.

One healthier habit.

One act of care.

One faithful choice repeated consistently over time.

Whether restoring dry skin, nurturing a healthy scalp, maintaining a healthy crown, or building healthier daily routines, lasting transformation is built through intentional stewardship.

──────────────────────────────

STEWARDSHIP IS THE HEART OF RESTORATION

At Soma Nika, restoration and stewardship cannot be separated.

Stewardship is recognizing that the body God has entrusted to us deserves intentional care.

Restoration is the fruit of that care.

Every nourishing ingredient.

Every healthy routine.

Every maintenance appointment.

Every thoughtful decision.

These are acts of stewardship that lead toward restoration.

──────────────────────────────

WHY SOMA NIKA EXISTS

Soma Nika was not born from the desire to start a skincare business.

It was born through service.

During a season of caring for family, one simple truth became clear:

"Intentional care has the power to restore."

That truth became the foundation of everything we create.

Our products are expressions of care.

Our services are expressions of care.

Our education is an expression of care.

Because restoration has always been our true purpose.

──────────────────────────────

RESTORATION IS PERSONAL

For one person, restoration may begin with healthier skin.

For another, it begins with learning how to care for their crown.

For someone else, it begins by slowing down and creating healthier daily habits.

No two restoration journeys look exactly alike.

But every journey begins with the decision to care intentionally.

──────────────────────────────

THE SOMA NIKA PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy can be summarized in one declaration:

"Soma Nika was birthed through service.

It grew out of sacrifice.

It is guided by stewardship.

It exists for RESTORATION."

This is not merely our story.

It is our commitment.

It shapes every product we formulate.

Every service we provide.

Every lesson we teach.

Every conversation we have.

──────────────────────────────

AN INVITATION

Restoration is not reserved for a select few.

It is available to anyone willing to take the first intentional step.

Whether you are restoring your skin...

Caring for your crown...

Learning healthier habits...

Or simply choosing to honor the body God has entrusted to you...

We invite you to begin that journey with us.

Not through perfection.

But through faithful, intentional care.

One choice.

One day.

One step at a time.

──────────────────────────────

THE RESTORATIVE THOUGHT

"Restoration doesn't begin when everything changes.

Restoration begins the moment we choose to faithfully care for what God has already placed in our hands."

──────────────────────────────

FOUNDER'S REFLECTION

"When Soma Nika was born, I thought I was creating natural products.

Looking back, I now understand that God was teaching me something much greater.

Restoration begins with service.

It grows through stewardship.

It flourishes through intentional care.

Everything Soma Nika has become is rooted in that simple truth."

Hydration-first education for Sisterlocks®, microlocs, locs, silver hair and natural hair—created to help you feel informed, comfortable and confident in every season of your crown journey.

Welcome to a Gentler Way of Learning About Your Crown

At Soma Nika, we believe loc care is about more than appearance. It is about feeling at home in your crown, honoring the season of life you are in, and learning how to care for your hair without feeling pressured to become someone else.

Whether you wear Sisterlocks®, microlocs, traditional locs, or are learning to love your natural silver, this library was prepared to offer clear guidance, thoughtful questions and practical routines.

Your care should reflect your hair, your scalp, your lifestyle and the stage of your journey—not a one-size-fits-all rule.

It’s more than hair. It’s restoration.

“Your crown. Our care. Your confidence.”
— The Soma Nika Approach

01 | Sisterlocks® and Microlocs: What Is the Difference?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions in loc care. The styles can look similar, but the names should not be used interchangeably.

The simplest distinction: Sisterlocks® is a specific proprietary natural-hair management system. Microlocs is a general descriptive term for small locs that may be established and maintained through different methods.

Sisterlocks®

  • A trademarked, structured system.

  • Officially described as tiny, uniform locks created with a precision parting grid and a specialized tool.

  • Installed and maintained by practitioners trained through the Sisterlocks organization.

  • Includes an official consultation, installation and follow-up process.

  • Early-stage cleansing and maintenance instructions should come from the client’s authorized Sisterlocks practitioner.

Microlocs

  • A broad, non-proprietary category of small locs.

  • Parting patterns, loc sizes and establishment methods may vary.

  • Training and service standards depend on the practitioner rather than one governing system.

  • Maintenance timing and products are individualized according to the method, loc maturity, scalp and lifestyle.

  • Clients should ask exactly how their microlocs will be started and maintained before booking.

Quick Comparison

Is it a named system?

Sisterlocks®: Yes. It is proprietary and trademarked.

Microlocs: No single proprietary system is implied by the term.

How are they created?

Sisterlocks®: Through the official precision-grid and tool-based system taught by Sisterlocks.

Microlocs: Methods and grids vary by practitioner.

Who provides the service?

Sisterlocks®: An authorized Sisterlocks practitioner should provide authentic Sisterlocks services.

Microlocs: A loctician or trained practitioner using their stated microloc method.

Is the care routine identical?

Sisterlocks®: No. Follow the official settling-in and maintenance guidance for your stage.

Microlocs: No. Care depends on method, maturity, density, scalp and product tolerance.

What do both benefit from?

Gentle cleansing, light product use, complete drying, low buildup and maintenance without excessive tension.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing

What system or method will be used?

Who trained the practitioner?

What does the consultation include?

How many locs or what size range is expected?

What is the maintenance schedule?

Which products are recommended during the settling stage?

What happens if there is slippage, bunching or scalp discomfort?

This educational page does not by itself represent affiliation with or endorsement by the Sisterlocks organization. 02 | The Soma Nika Hydration-First Playbook

“Your locs drink water first” is our simple teaching reminder: when hair needs added hydration, begin with light, water-based care instead of stacking heavy products.

This is not a rule to wet the hair every day. The right routine depends on your loc stage, hair condition, scalp health, climate and professional guidance.

01 | Water-Based Care First

Use a commercially prepared or properly formulated and preserved lightweight water-based product when your hair needs added hydration.

Do not store homemade water, tea or aloe sprays unless a qualified formulator has developed and tested an effective preservation system.

02 | Light Layers

Apply small amounts and work in sections.

Oils may lubricate the hair, reduce friction and slow moisture loss, but they do not supply water to a dry fiber.

More product does not automatically mean better-conditioned hair.

03 | Scalp-Aware Care

Cleanse according to your scalp, hair and buildup level.

Persistent itching or scaling, scalp pain or tenderness, sores, drainage, sudden shedding, patchy loss or a receding hairline should be evaluated by a dermatologist or other qualified healthcare professional—not covered with more product.

Phase 01 | Wake & Refresh — As Needed

  • Notice how the scalp and locs feel before adding anything.

  • If hydration is needed, apply a small amount of a properly preserved water-based mist, following its label directions.

  • Focus on the areas that feel dry and avoid repeatedly soaking the roots or scalp between washes.

  • Use only the products approved for your Sisterlocks® or microloc stage.

  • Protect at night with satin or silk once the hair is completely dry.

Phase 02 | Cleanse & Reset — Wash Interval

  • Cleanse the scalp gently with a shampoo suited to your stage and scalp needs.

  • Massage the scalp with the fingertips; do not scratch with nails.

  • Let the lather and rinse water move through the locs instead of rubbing the lengths together.

  • Condition only when appropriate for the loc maturity and maintenance system.

  • Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

Phase 03 | Review & Deep Care — Periodically or As Needed

  • Clarify when buildup is present—not automatically on a fixed calendar—with a cleanser compatible with your loc stage and scalp.

  • Review maintenance timing with your consultant or loctician.

  • Use protein or deeper conditioning only when the hair’s condition and loc maturity indicate a need.

  • Avoid untested DIY acid, clay, honey, tea or botanical mixtures that may alter pH, leave residue, introduce contamination or irritate the scalp.

  • Document recurring dryness, slippage, breakage or scalp changes.

03 | Your Soma Nika Wash Day Checklist

A calm, intentional wash day supports cleanliness, comfort and long-term loc care.

It is not a race, and it is not the day to experiment with every product on the shelf.

A Slow, Careful Practice

Gentle cleansing. Light product use. Thorough rinsing. Complete drying.

Your exact routine should match the stage and method of your locs.

PRO TIP: When hair feels dry, pause before adding oil. First ask whether it needs water-based care, cleansing, less buildup—or professional attention.

01 | Prepare

Remove accessories.

Check the scalp for irritation, sores, unusual scaling or tender areas.

Follow banding or bundling instructions when required for your loc stage.

02 | Cleanse

Apply the recommended shampoo to the scalp.

Massage gently with fingertips and allow the cleanser to rinse through the locs.

Do not scrub locs against one another.

03 | Rinse

Rinse methodically until the water runs clear and the cleanser is removed, paying special attention to small, dense or long locs.

Incomplete rinsing can leave residue that contributes to dullness, irritation and buildup.

04 | Condition Carefully

Use conditioner only when it is appropriate for your loc maturity and system.

Early Sisterlocks® clients should follow their consultant’s official settling-in guidance.

05 | Use Less Product

Apply leave-in or oil only when needed and approved for your stage.

Work in sections and start with less than you think you need.

06 | Dry Fully

Blot or wrap gently—do not rub.

Air-dry when practical or use the lowest comfortable heat setting.

Because dense locs can remain damp inside, confirm that the roots and inner sections are dry before covering, styling or sleeping.

07 | Observe

Look for slippage, bunching, thinning, weak ends or recurring flakes.

Document structural concerns for your practitioner.

Seek medical evaluation promptly for scalp pain, sores, drainage, patchy loss or sudden shedding.

08 | Protect at Night

Use satin or silk after the hair is completely dry.

Choose a loose, comfortable style that does not compress or pull the hairline.

Sisterlocks® Note

During the settling-in stage, use the cleanser, banding method and schedule supplied by your authorized practitioner.

The official system emphasizes a “less-is-more” approach and recommends exclusive use of its starter shampoo until the locks have settled.

Microlocs Note

Because microloc methods vary, ask your practitioner for method-specific instructions.

Clarify whether banding, conditioning, interlocking frequency or styling limits apply to your installation.

04 | The Soma Nika Silver Locs Guide

Silver is not a flaw to correct.

It is a season to understand, protect and enjoy.

Gray and nonpigmented fibers may behave differently from pigmented fibers, but no two crowns age in exactly the same way.

More Luminous. More Intentional. Fully Yourself.

Research has found differences in the diameter, waviness, stiffness, movement and friction of nonpigmented hair fibers.

Aging can also change scalp oil production and hair density.

These changes may make some silver hair feel drier, coarser or more delicate—but they are not universal, and they do not make silver hair “less healthy” by definition.

Hydrate According to Need

Use a light, preserved water-based product when the hair feels dry.

Avoid rigid rules such as misting twice every day.

Cleanse Gently and Thoroughly

Choose a cleanser suited to your scalp, loc stage and buildup level.

Rinse completely.

Use Light, Low-Residue Products

Apply sparingly so silver locs stay bright and small locs remain free-moving.

Limit Friction, Tension and Excessive Heat

Use gentle drying, comfortable styles that do not pull, and the lowest effective heat setting.

Protect From Environmental Dulling

Rinse promptly after swimming.

During prolonged sun exposure, use a hat, scarf or hair product specifically labeled for UV protection.

Respond to Your Own Crown

Adjust care for texture, density, scalp comfort, medications, climate and life stage.

Weekly or by Wash Schedule | Keep It Clean and Light

Cleanse the scalp gently, rinse thoroughly and use only stage-appropriate conditioning.

Finish with complete drying.

Heavy residue often shows more visibly against silver fibers.

Periodically or As Needed | Review Tone and Buildup

Use a properly formulated clarifier when buildup is present.

A purple or silver-toning cleanser may reduce the appearance of some yellow tones, but it will not correct every cause of discoloration.

Follow the label, use it only as needed and stop if it leaves the hair overly dry or discolored.

Keeping Silver Luminous

  • Avoid dark, residue-prone butters and heavy pomades.

  • Rinse promptly after swimming.

  • Use heat conservatively.

  • Avoid untested DIY acids, clays and botanical rinses.

  • Discuss fragile ends with a trusted consultant before cutting locs.

Silver Is Not Fragile—It Is Precious.

New energy. Same beautiful you.
